Yancheng Eco Journey: A Day Among Deer and Cranes

Yancheng, located along the Yellow Sea coast of Jiangsu Province, is one of China’s most important ecological cities and part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage “China Yellow Sea–Bohai Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuaries.” According to official Yancheng tourism and ecological protection authorities, the city is best experienced through its wetlands and wildlife reserves. A classic one-day eco journey brings visitors into two iconic habitats: the China Milu (Père David’s Deer) Park and the Yancheng Red-crowned Crane Wetland Ecotourism Area, where rare species and vast coastal wetlands create a living natural world.

China Milu Park

The China Milu Park in Yancheng is one of the world’s most important conservation bases for Père David’s deer, a species once extinct in the wild and successfully reintroduced in China. According to official ecological protection records, Yancheng provides an ideal coastal wetland environment for the long-term survival and breeding of this rare animal.
Walking through the park, visitors enter a wide landscape of grasslands, reeds, and shallow wetlands where Milu deer roam freely in herds. Elevated walkways and viewing platforms allow close observation of their natural behavior, offering a rare opportunity to experience large-scale wildlife conservation in a semi-wild ecological setting.

Yancheng Red-crowned Crane Wetland Ecotourism Area

The Yancheng Red-crowned Crane Wetland Ecotourism Area is a nationally protected nature reserve and one of the most important habitats for the endangered red-crowned crane in China. Official tourism and conservation documents highlight its role within the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, supporting millions of migratory birds each year.
The landscape is composed of vast reed marshes, tidal flats, and interconnected wetland ecosystems. Visitors can explore wooden boardwalks and observation towers to watch cranes gracefully moving through the wetlands, especially at sunrise when the entire area is filled with golden light and bird activity.
